Learn more about "The Rapids Report with Emmy McGill"

Updated on: September 23, 2025 / CR News

YouTube

"The Rapids Report" features in-depth reporting, interviews, and analysis that aims to inform students on the issues Columbia River High School and the broader community face, as well as start a dialogue on how students and staff can effect change.

Created by Talan Collins (@talanjcollins) in November 2023, the discussion program has tackled topics such as equity and inclusion, the impact of A.I. and social media in the classroom, as well as education funding and reform.

In May of 2024, Collins sat down with the lieutenant governor of the State of Washington, Denny Heck -- a River alumni -- discussing the impact of district-wide budget cuts and how funding gaps can be better addressed throughout Washington. Collins sat down with Vancouver Public Schools superintendent Dr. Jeff Snell in November 2024 to address the district's response to these same cuts.

In June, 2024, "The Rapids Report" received its first student production award nomination from the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. It has since earned two more nominations in 2025, for non-fiction long form and magazine program—the latter of which it won in June, 2025.

In May of 2025, it was announced that then co-moderator and associate producer Emmy McGill would become the next moderator the current affairs program the following school year.

In her first episode as moderator, McGill was joined by River's new principal Darby Meade for an in-depth interview about his priorities and plans for success ahead of the 2025-2026 school year.
