Slow pitch softball finishes off its dominant season by placing fifth at the state tournament.
-------- WIAA
The tournament started on Friday where the team faced off against Shadle Park. River went on to score 11 runs in the affair, but unfortunately let up 20 runs, which resulted in a loss. However, at that point, they were not out of the tournament quite yet, as they still had a chance to take third place. They had one more game later that day, where they faced off against Inglemoor and took a convincing 21-2 win. This kept them alive in the tournament heading into Saturday.
On Saturday, they had one guaranteed game and another one if they won the first game. In their first, and unfortunately only, game on Saturday, they fell in a close 12-8 contest against Walla Walla. That loss unfortunately ended the girls’ season.
“The team played very well together this weekend and I am super proud of how they never gave up,” explained head coach Maggie Harshaw. “They were heads up on plays that we have been working on all season and had really [positive] attitudes.”
However, it is important to remember all of the successes that this team had. They went 12-3 in the regular season and went on to win districts against a tough opponent in Kelso. Also, in the postseason, including districts, the team went 4-2. This all comes after losing their head coach and three pivotal players (who were seniors last year) during the offseason. The team was able to persevere these challenges and had a strong season with a lot of playoff success.
“I feel really lucky to have had this team for my first season at River,” Harshaw described. “The team adjusted well to new expectations and worked extremely hard at getting better each practice and game.”
