The meet, in almost all aspects, was dominated by River. They had four top-10 finishers in every event and in the all-around scores.
“I’m so proud of this team today,” explained sophomore Sarah Hagerty. “I feel like [having] a close team and being able to move on from rough events… is really what helps our team do really great.”
“Today [we] performed the best we have all season so far. We got our highest team score [this season] with a 165.5,” senior Macey Chenette described.
As for results from the meet for River:
Vault: 8th-Sloan Atkins (8.5), 7th-Lexa Straub (8.6), 4th-Hagerty (8.7), 3rd-Chenette (8.7)
Bars: 8th-Hagerty (7.8), 5th-Straub (8.2), 3rd-Chenette (8.2), 1st-Atkins (8.6)
Beam: 8th-Straub (8.05), 5th-Chenette (8.4), 4th-Hagerty (8.65), 2nd-Atkins (8.8)
Floor: 8th-Atkins (8.7), 7th-Straub (8.8), 5th-Hagerty (9.1), 1st-Chenette (9.4)
All-Around: 8th-Straub (33.65), 6th-Hagerty (34.25), 2nd-Atkins (34.6), 1st-Chenette (34.7)
This performance for River is only a microcosm of how their whole season has gone. They have taken home several wins and continue to improve their team score, thanks in large part due to some of the newer gymnasts.
“Some of our newcomers are doing really well this season… they’re adding not just skills, but energy,” Chenette told. She added that the team has also found much success since “people who were on the team last year are improving like crazy.”
Yesterday’s win also gave the team a lot of hope going forward.
“[This win] means we have a great chance of making it to state,” Hagerty said. “Being able to [get] first… gives us so much hope for the end of the season.”
