Brooklynn Vickery reflects on how the River Softball team will be able to make a deep playoff run amidst a pivotal two-game stretch to end the regular season.

Although the team has already qualified for the district tournament, they have bigger aspirations such as winning league and earning a higher seed going into the tournament.
The top two teams in league currently are Mark Morris (14-1) and Ridgefield (11-1) and River will play both of them next week. The outcome of those games will likely decide who wins league this year.
Last time River faced those two teams they struggled. When they played Ridgefield they lost 5-16, and against Mark Morris they lost 0-5.
“We weren’t really prepared and… in the [right] mindset,” said junior Brooklynn Vickery on their game against Ridgefield.
Despite this, going into next week the team is already planning what it must do to win both games.
For Ridgefield the team must “[tighten] up their defense… and [get] the hitting going early,” said Vickery. As for R.A. Long, River must “work around their pitcher… and [play small ball].”
“We’re [mostly] focusing on what’s next instead of just thinking about the big picture,” Vickery explained on what the team’s goals are for the postseason. To make a deep playoff run, Vickery believes the team needs to continue to work together and tighten up its defense.
“We’re really hard working… [and] we strive for the same thing, we just want to… go as far as possible,” said Vickery.
With playoffs just around the corner and as the games get more important, the team is also looking to receive more support.
“I feel like people need to come… support softball a little bit more,” Vickery said. “I think that would be really a nice thing for the team.”
With only two games left in the regular season, the games are not only important for seeding but also for getting a feel for the postseason environment.
Make sure to come out and support the softball team. They play Mark Morris later today at VGSA at 4:00 p.m., and take on Ridgefield at RORC on Thursday at 4:30. Great job, and good luck, girls!
