Club member Emily Shawver shares a similar belief in the value of the competitive club, adding that FCCLA allows her and others to “step outside of our comfort zones to deal with professional circumstances and put together something that can impact the future of children.”
Shawver, alongside Leona Lee, competed in the Focus on Children event during the FCCLA Regional event on January 9, showcasing a project that highlighted the importance of dental hygiene for elementary school students. The team also went to Boys and Girls Clubs in order to teach elementary schoolers hands-on techniques for dental hygiene. The two, accompanied by six other River students who attended as volunteers, won several gold medals and qualified River’s FCCLA for the state competition in Spokane this March.
