(CR News) - Our ASA, or Asian Student Association club here at River, spent this past week creating red envelopes in honor of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Club members handed these envelopes out to people during first and second lunches this past Friday. The purpose of these red envelopes is to bring in good luck along with love and prosperity for the New Year, normally given to children and/or unmarried individuals. The common tradition in many Asian cultures has been going on for centuries; these red envelopes are filled with money or, in this case, candies and treats.
The ASA’s co-president, Pascal Phan, tells CR News that “with this tradition, the ASA can celebrate our heritage as well as share our culture with the river community.” If interested in joining the ASA, meetings are Wednesdays after school in room 801 and typically last about half an hour._____________________________________
