IB Art students display their works for the community in annual IB Art Exhibition

Seniors in River’s two year IB Art program proved they had mastered that challenge on Tuesday, March 19 – as the annual IB Art Exhibition saw them showcase their diverse body of works for the community to appreciate. In addition to the many months it took for students to conceptualize and physically realize their pieces, the exhibition itself took an entire day to set up, following hours of preparation and planning.
The elaborate event, which took place in the Black Box and featured organized lighting and live music courtesy of student Zachary Guevara, featured a collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, pottery, and photography, among other mediums.
IB Art teacher Jason Phelps explained that the exhibition was only “the tip of the iceberg,” and that he hopes those who attended were “struck by the sheer amount of production students do,” and that visitors realized the “diversity of visions that have come out of our community.” Phelps told CR News that “every student chooses themes that interest them,” which he said they can “funnel into one medium” or explore through a “mixed media approach.”
For senior painter Amelia Rice, that personalized approach is “heavily inspired” by her own experiences, “personal stress, and thoughts.”
Her work for the IB Art program, collectively entitled Welcome to My Mind, she expressed has given her “an invaluable opportunity to grow in a technical sense.”
Rice says she loved “getting into the feeling” where “you just kind of go with the flow” when creating and experimenting. “The thing I love about IB Art,” she said, “is how individualized it can become. There's no generic pathway for any one IB Art student.”
