(CR News) - Next Monday, school is canceled for the federal holiday Martin Luther King Jr. Day. MLK Day was rejected when it was first introduced to the House of Representatives in 1979 due in part to government expenses and the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. was a private citizen. The King Center, an organization dedicated to peaceful conflict resolution, enlisted the help of the general public and corporate community to campaign for MLK Day as a federally recognized holiday. In a petition to Congress, six million signatures were collected to pass the law, and in a 2006 article from The Nation, it was claimed to be the “largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history”. The third Monday of January is now dedicated to the holiday. On Friday, River’s Diversity Equity Club will be hosting the annual Martin Luther King Jr. assembly, this year sponsored by the NAACP, an organization committed to ending racial inequality. The assembly will include a performance by the Jazz band, solos by Remi Smith, and guest speaker Jose Scott. Afterward, the NAACP will be providing a voter registration table for those who are eligible.
Please remember this will be a formal assembly and to be respectful of the speakers._____________________________________
