(CR News) - In the midst of vandalism, acts of hatred and intimidation, and a generally polarized student culture, River students proved that there is more that unites us. We all want to ensure our community is taken care of, and that begins with each of us deciding to be a part of the solution and not the problem.
Most students have no idea how much trash is all around them, as most discarded items are seemingly small and insignificant. However, from bottle caps to gum wrappers, our waste adds up over time, and can jeopardize the health of our ecosystem.
River’s Green Team is actively trying to do something about this. On Friday, and in partnership with student leaders from River’s National Honor Society, the team organized a school-wide cleanup.
Among the buckets worth of objects that were collected – soda cans, fast food wrappers, non-biodegradable plastics, and items containing substances toxic to local wildlife.
Shaylin Murphy, a member of Green Team, said in a statement via @crhsgreenteam, that “we can do so much better at keeping the environment around us clean,” adding we should “look at the earth with more care and do better at doing what [we] can to make a more positive impact on [our] world.”
Another club member, Momoka Young, adds that efforts to pick up litter are “so beneficial not just for the school but for the surrounding wildlife and biodiversity that might be exposed to waste.” Young invites anyone who is interested in taking action to join Green Team’s efforts. The club usually meets Fridays in room 611.
Overall, the after school cleanup saw participation from a wide variety of students, reminding us that it takes all of us together to effect change in our community. Everyone has the opportunity to be a part of that effort, and it begins by choosing not to carelessly litter items – no matter how small. Similarly, if we want to change the student culture here at River, we have to realize that change does not start at the top, it takes action from every one of us._____________________________________
