The matchup against Enumclaw High School on Saturday should be a battle. Both teams went 16-4 on the year, and only one can move on. Regardless, the rise of the basketball team has been one for the ages.
Last season, the girls went 5-15 on the year, and struggled through much of the year. Though, this year, the team has improved a lot, both offensively and defensively, and are competing for state.
Jeni McAnally, the assistant coach, said that the key to success compared to last year all started before the start of the season where the girls had a meeting, where the girls decided they wanted “to win league [and] they wanted to be competitive in every game.” After every game and practice they asked, “is what we’re doing right now going to lead us to achieve that?” (winning league and being competitive in every game). The girls basketball reached those two goals, with defense being their “bread and butter”, alongside many great weapons on offense.
Going into Saturday, McAnally says that “focus and energy” will give them the edge. The team wants to play more defensively, and capitalize on their offensive opportunities.
The game against Enumclaw High School is at Auburn High School on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
